Edward Gibbs joined Sotheby’s in 2003. He advises private, corporate and institutional collectors across Europe, North America, North Africa, The Middle East, South Asia and throughout the Muslim world. He oversees two major auction categories: Arts of the Islamic World and Contemporary Arab, Iranian and Turkish Art.

Mr Gibbs’ career exemplifies his passion for Islamic Art, which began in 1988 with a visit to al-Andalus and the Great Mosque of Cordova. Prior to joining Sotheby's, he served for seven years as lecturer in Islamic Art at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London, where he set up the innovative Foundation Course in Asian Art with Sotheby’s Institute of Art. In 1997, he was invited by the British Council to co-curate the exhibition Traditions of Respect: Britain and Islamic Cultures to mark the 50th anniversary of the independence of India and Pakistan. The exhibition was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in Lahore and New Delhi.

Mr Gibbs worked for two years with The Abu Dhabi Islands Archaeological Survey (ADIAS) on Marawah Island off shore Abu Dhabi under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan. He went on to excavate the Mamluk Period fortress at Homs, Syria, as part of the British-Syrian Archaeological Project at Homs Citadel. Earlier in his career, he spent several years travelling across the Middle East carrying out research and excavations in Egypt, Syria and the Arabian Gulf.

Mr Gibbs has lectured at the University of London, the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Honolulu Academy of Arts and the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha. In 1997, as visiting scholar at the British Museum, he catalogued The Godman Collection of Iznik Ceramics and in 2000, he was visiting scholar at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Gayer-Anderson Museum in Cairo.

Mr Gibbs graduated with Honours from Cambridge University in 1986 and has a second degree from the University of London.

ABU DHABI - On 21 April 2013 the highly anticipated inaugural exhibition of the Louvre Abu Dhabi opened to fanfare and did not disappoint. Unfortunately I was not able to attend it due to our Orientalist and Islamic sales in London, but Robin Woodhead our CEO and International Chairman was able to relay some first-hand information. With great attendance and visits by HH the Crown Prince, Louvre personalities and VIPs of the art world, the long-awaited exhibition spelled out Abu Dhabi’s ambitious and far-reaching plans for development of the arts in the UAE.

Robin told us, "For a museum which sets out to represent a universal ‘connectedness,’ this first opportunity to see what has been so thoughtfully, indeed elegantly acquired was an encouraging insight into the curatorial ambitions for the Collection."

More than 130 works were unveiled from the Museum’s first permanent collection, ranging from paintings by Picasso and Mondrian to Islamic miniatures. The universality of the collection, its ability to connect ancient sections of a Qur’an alongside a 16th century statue of ‘Christ showing his Wounds,’ as well as a Torah, underline Olivier Gabet’s statement that “there are no red lines in this exhibition.”

An exquisite building designed by Jean Nouvel will open in 2015 to house a collection that will have important works by Picasso, Manet, Gauguin,  Magritte, Twombly and Klee, amongst others. Favourable reviews and a positive reception from these nascent stages point to a promising outcome, and the birth of yet another extraordinary regional art institution.
