Modern Artists Biography

Art has the potential to profoundly impact an individual. It reminds us to dream, and is an oasis in the hectic, attention demanding, world.

In my work, I try to capture the magic all of us felt as children. Discovering the universe around us, filled us with a sense of wonder.

Why abstract art ?

Abstract art often bypasses the intellect and speaks to the heart rather then the head, leaving the viewer to discover their own meanings and interpretations.

These interpretations can change over time giving the viewer ever new perspectives. Seeing an abstract from across the room can trigger one set of interpretations while up close new mysteries can be revealed.

My Process

In my work , I am drawn to the concepts of universal archetypes and symbols. My goal is to engage the subconscious mind through the use of these representations.

Natural processes such as erosion, oxidization, rust, and other things in nature that leave distinct patterns, draw me to try and recreate those patterns in my work.

My love of metal, and the ability metal provides to create the feeling of age, depth and sculptural dimension, allows me to add mood and mystery to the mixture.

I love to work with texture. I think of the first stage as purely sculptural. I like to build up the surface of the canvas or wood with thickened gesso, copper, sand, glass, or any thing else that appears interesting. By creating deep highs and lows, it suggests a feeling or direction I want the painting go in. Then I add the color.

Adding texture to a piece, as in mixed media, changes how a piece is viewed. It introduces a sculptural aspect that draws the viewer in. This can create shadows, changing the mood of the painting as the light moves across it’s surface.

With every painting, my intention is to explore technical as well as creative goals. I often find myself needing to create a new tool or process to accomplish the effect I wish to create. I find not being bound by traditional methods gives me the freedom to be as inventive and innovative as my creative inspiration allows.

Someone looking at a painting, and being deeply affected by it, completes the circle. I create the art and hope that it touches an individual on a deeply personal and elemental level. Every time that happens, I have succeeded in my goal. The final communication of the paintings intent is completed in the viewers mind.

The painting is the end result of a journey. I hope you enjoy traveling with me.

Brian Giberson of Indigo Lights
Brian’s bio

Brian Giberson has been a professional artist his entire life, working as a freelance illustrator, a computer artist and animator, and art director and head of the sculpture department for a major game company.

Brian has taught portrait sculpture, various jewelry techniques and glass fusing at the Irvine Fine Art Center in Irvine California.

He is also cofounder of Indigo Lights, a jewelry design company where he works with his wife Sheri Cohen, creating one of a kind art jewelry. Their work has been featured in "Metal Corrugation", a book of jewelry technique, by Trish McAleer..

All of theses past disciplines contribute to the unique art Brian produces today.

Brian lives in southern California with his wife Sheri.

Brian has always been drawn to the color and motion that abstract art provides. As an artist, he finds metal art, and contemporary art, showcase his use of acrylic paints, metals, and patinas in a way that allows his imagination to express itself fully.

Brian uses strong, bold and richly colored acrylic paint in his paintings. His original artwork features a variety of unusual materials such as hammered copper, old paper currency, vintage kimono fabric, distressed metal , found objects and sand. Anything that captures his interest is considered.

In his collage art, he creates multiple layers of visual interest in each original piece, that invites the viewer to question what is revealed vs. what is concealed. One layer may be a harmonious thematic blending while another may be a juxtaposed color and texture counter point. Every time you add something new, the relationships of existing elements echo and respond back. It’s a art in the moment. Art to reflect on. Art to dream on.
