It has been designed with both entertainment and enlightenment in mind. You are free to wander around the site and simply view the delights that geometric design offers, or if, like the author, you are fascinated by the construction process an explanation of each design is also available.
Thumbnail copies of the images are used on the main pages with larger versions available by clicking on them. The larger versions are usually accompanied by a description of the design process.

As you can see from the images on the left, The Seasons is a series of landscapes. Although originally created in oils, the pictures shown here were derived from scans of screenprints.
The underlying pattern, which is identical in each of the trees, was derived from a traditional Islamic design, to which was added a wave function. The 'landscape' was picked out by varying the colours used in each of the segments of the pattern. The tree structures were created by simply thickening some of the lines between the segments.
The Seasons project began with the Islamic design on page 100 of the book entitled Geometric Concepts in Islamic Art by Issam El-Said & Ayse Parman. Figure 1 (on the right) is an animated construction of the basic unit of the design as shown in the book.
This basic unit is then extended to form a larger hexagon (see Figure 2) in which the original unit occupies the central hexagon. The next stage is to apply a little distortion in the form of a wave function (see Figure 3). Without going into detail, this 'wave' is applied in the form of an anti-clockwise torque at each of the six vertices of the outer hexagon and at the centre. The vertices, the centre and the mid points between them all remain static whilst the degree of torque applied is sufficient to generate arcs between them with centres at an adjacent mid point. Other lines were drawn freehand using the distorted frame as a guide though they could of course be plotted geometrically.
To complete the structure of the image we now need to thicken some of the lines to represent the tree trunk and branches and select an horizon line. Where the Tree being rendered is displaying foliage then the trunk and branches will be partially obscured; it is a matter of choice as to which sections will actually show. Then finally, the colours must be selected to represent whichever season is being depicted.
This pattern is fairly unusual in that the tessera do not vary greatly in size (tessara are the individual bits that make up the whole mosaic) whereas most Islamic designs consist of one bold element surrounded by many of substantially smaller proportions. By keeping to units of similar size it meant that a pictorial image could be developed that was not dominated by the root pattern. Instead it could be held in tension by the representational aspect of the landscape. Indeed it is a pleasing feature of the final design that the pattern does not immediately intrude into the picture, rather, viewers will find that after a short time gazing at the images, the structure of the pattern will emerge.
OK, so the normal annual cycle contains only four seasons. Why then are there five trees in this series?
The answer lies in the nature of a cycle - with its beginning and its end. Two points that are adjacent; so close that they may as well be considered coincident. The cycle of nature that begins with the unborn state and concludes with death. The time before birth is one of potential, of the summoning of the forces of creation. A time of fire and the first emergence of light onto the landscape.
And so the cycle begins with Winter Dawn.
And is followed by Spring Morning, Summer Afternoon and Autumn Evening.
Before ending in the cold dark death of Winter Night.
Ergo, Five Seasons.
The first of the completed trees (Tree No. I) was a version of Winter Night in oils on paper which was entered into a mixed exhibition at the Hiscock Gallery in Southsea in 1981. It was sold and removed so quickly that no photograph was ever taken of it. If any reader knows of its whereabouts the author would be pleased to hear from them.
The first set of Four Seasons (Trees Nos. II to V) were painted in acrylics on paper and sold in 1982. These were followed by two further studies (Trees Nos VI and VII) of the Winter Trees which were given to friends in Italy in 1987.
Also in 1987 the Trees appeared as a screen print for the first time. This was (Tree No. VIII) a study of Winter Dawn which measured just 6 inches square. 12 copies were produced and most were given to friends as Christmas cards.
The full set of the Five Seasons (Trees Nos IX to XIII) were completed between June 1988 and August 1989. The print run for each tree ran to a limited edition of 55 or 56. Some are still available for purchase.
The Five Seasons are currently being generated by computer and will be numbered XIV to XVIII.
