Making and reasoning a sustainable world is her purpose in a world against reason as a Muslim woman. Some view her Art as a contemporary style of Islamic calligraphy. In the West some call it ‘Daliesque’ or the sounds of a ‘Klee’. However, she does not view herself as a traditional calligrapher but an artist who pens the sounds of dhikr of the word and the natural world-the rhythms and Notes she Scores. She does not see herself as a soothsayer or a judge or a scholar under present definitions or labels, though she does practice her Art seeking knowledge and unfolding truths through the lens of proper readings, scholarship and action amidst erudite expeditions and the natural world. She is well grounded in the human made traditions of Islamic Calligraphy and its history where the Creator has been her only master. Her Art is a vehicle towards knowing, who I am, as a human trying to find her way home. Her work has evolved throughout her life from her first Art exhibit as a thirteen year old, to the present and continues in an evolution of understanding grounded in sound, rhythm, geometry, motion and light. Art has always been as she calls, her ‘Linus’s Blanket as my story unfolds’. Motion, sound and tensile and compressive structure is an essence of her building, writing and artistic palette. Her Art and Architecture are complements, of each other with the thread of philanthropy and written work the constancy. It is the pen which strengthens the bond between each of her works. All her work celebrate, as she phrases: ‘the stitching of a Sustainable human’. In the end it is about realizing God through knowing the self which can be achieved by striving to know one’s responsibilities in the world. To know this is to realize the importance to serve expressly the weak, the poor, the sick, the orphan and the women as all the Prophets and great minds have reminded. To realize all the bounties of the natural world are for all people and not for a select few wealthy to hoard. Art can be a tool to realize this.
A biographical note:
She originally hails from Canada with an international exposure and a birthright of Pakistan with parental roots from India. She emerges from playing in the Sahara desert; to growing up in the Atlantic environment of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada; to the ghostly landscapes of New England; to the windy city of Chicago; and flatlands of Raggedy Ann’s Indiana. She is a registered and licensed Architect, registered with NCARB (National Certification and Architectural Registration Board) LEED certified with the US Green Building Council, a member of the American Institute of Architects and Green Roofs for Healthy Cities; and a board member of Arts United in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She is a graduate of Carleton University in Ottawa with honors and a recipient of the Ontario Association of Architects Medal. Her thesis work is a continuation of her Art, Architecture and written work....as the story continues.
She has been practicing for 15 years in the USA, with three internationally distinct firms and now a founder of her own practice and consultancy; a sustainable and green Architecture practice called, AYN Architect LLC. In addition she is an Islamic calligraphic Artist with a work unique to her approach and a writer/poet. Her Art is called Pen and Inkpot: a Spiritual Art. She is also the founder of the 501c3 non-profit charitable organization-The Pen and Inkpot Foundation- which projects include Iftar for Human Dignity food Drives during Ramadan, interfaith events as Taste of Ramadan, educational scholarships, and a sustainable design projects for a refugee community to name a few.
She exhibits and speak on her essays rooted as a Muslim woman at various universities and serves as an Architectural guest critic on Green and Islamic Architecture and Art. She has served as a judge for the Scholastic Arts Competition for the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. Her spiritual Art has been selected for group and solo exhibits and publications all over the USA. Presently, one of her Art pieces was selected to be published by a Christian Author who uses Art as a dialogue in Muslim-Christian relations called Reclaiming Beauty for the Good of the World: Muslim & Christian Creativity as Moral Force; and the Islamic Writers Alliance cover design of their fiction stories Anthology. She does commissioned Art of her work for individuals all over the USA and Canada and it is used by non-profit organizations to raise funds for charitable projects; two of her works are presently at the embassy in Qatar in Washington. She has spoken on her work and exhibited her Art at various events and has been selected for various exhibits as the Woman Made gallery’s HER MARK and its International Juried Exhibit in Chicago; City Wide Open Studios in New Haven Connecticut; Blank Canvas-Indus Women’s Art Exhibit in Chicago; World Trade Center Memorial competition/Art Exhibit in NY city; the Flat file gallery for Endless Eye Production for the film ‘A Message from the East’ and the 4th Presbyterian Church, Michigan Ave. Interfaith Art exhibit both in Chicago; Auburn University and the Indiana University Arts Council. She has been interviewed with an Islamic Radio podcast in Cairo, Egypt and IU, in Bloomington, Indiana. She is working various projects of a Sustainable Design nature as a Library for the Lost Boys of Sudan, a Community Center for a refugee community, a restaurant project using corn and wind as an energy source, a pending school following the LEED certification process and various visions for a Sustainable design for several communities locally and internationally. Presently, she is pursuing to publish a philosophical treatise of her written work that uses three major pieces of her Art to corroborate the books theme.
